Sacred. Decolonized. Trauma-Informed Birthwork

Traditional Midwifery Practices

Traditional Midwifery focuses on holistic, family-centered care, blending ancestral wisdom with some modern knowledge, emphasizing natural processes, comfort, emotional/spiritual support (like massages, herbal remedies, rituals), and empowering the mother, often outside hospitals in homes or birth centers for a less medicalized, culturally safe experience.

  • Practices include herbal teas for labor/postpartum, belly massage (sobadas), specific labor positions, postpartum care (diets, cleansing), and spiritual healing, while also identifying risks and providing referrals when needed.

Holistic Midwife Herbalism

Midwife Herbalism integrates traditional plant medicine with midwifery care, using herbs like red raspberry leaf, nettle, and ginger to nourish mothers, tone the uterus, ease labor, reduce postpartum pain, and support lactation, offering a natural, holistic approach to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery, though it emphasizes safe, informed choices and often works alongside conventional medicine.

It involves creating tinctures, teas, and remedies for common concerns like stress, contractions, and milk supply, building on ancestral knowledge for empowered birth.

Holistic Midwife Nutrition Counseling

Integrates Personalized Diet Plans with overall wellness, focusing on whole foods, essential nutrients, and lifestyle to support preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, and lactation, aiming to address common complaints like fatigue or nausea and empower families with sustainable, nutrient-dense eating habits for better health outcomes.

Traditional Midwives and Full-Spectrum Doulas offer guidance beyond standard care, creating customized plans for everything from hormone balance to gut health, often incorporating herbal support and bridging gaps in care for truly comprehensive, client-centered support.

What It Involves:

  • Comprehensive Assessment: Reviewing medical history, current diet, lifestyle, and specific concerns to create a unique plan.
  • Personalized Plans: Developing strategies for optimal nutrition, incorporating whole foods, adequate hydration, and essential vitamins/minerals for mother and baby.
  • Addressing Symptoms Holistically: Using nutrition (meal timing, specific foods, nutrient-dense choices) to manage pregnancy symptoms like morning sickness, fatigue, or insomnia.
  • Empowerment & Education: Providing resources, recipes, and strategies for lasting healthy habits, building confidence in self-care.

Key Focuses:

  • Preconception: Preparing the body for pregnancy.
  • Prenatal: Optimizing nutrition for a healthy pregnancy and fetal development.
  • Postpartum & Lactation: Supporting healing, energy, and breastfeeding.
  • Specific Conditions: Managing hormonal imbalances, gut health, inflammation, fertility, PCOS, or thyroid issues.

Perinatal Mental Health Care

Supports Individuals through pregnancy and postpartum, addressing anxiety, depression, OCD, and other issues arising from hormonal shifts, life changes, and new parenting demands.

What It Addresses:

  • Conditions: Perinatal depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and general stress.
  • Challenges: Infertility, loss, relationship strain, body image issues, sleep deprivation, and identity shifts.
  • Impact: Affects the parent, baby, and entire family system.

Common Approaches:

  • Post-Partum Blues & Depression Evaluations: Helps identify symptoms during pregnancy or in the first year following the birth of a child. Perinatal mental illness affects up to 27% of new and expectant mums and covers a wide range of conditions.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors related to pregnancy and parenting.
  • Mindfulness & Relaxation: Teaches techniques to manage anxiety and stress.
  • Relationship Counseling: Addresses the couple's dynamic during the transition to parenthood.

Client Aligned Spiritual Practices

Centers the birthing person's beliefs, integrating rituals, mind-body techniques, and cultural traditions to honor birth as a sacred, transformative journey.

Often involving doulas and midwives, to facilitate personalized support like prayers, meditation, herbal baths, massage (rebozo, belly binding), ancestral wisdom, and sacred ceremonies for deep empowerment and connection.

Common Practices & Techniques:

  • Mind-Body: Prenatal yoga, meditation, guided imagery, deep breathing, hypnobirthing to reduce stress and enhance coping.
  • Rituals & Ceremony: Lighting candles, affirmations, prayer, drumming, singing, smudging, and cultural ceremonies.
  • Sacred Touch & Bodywork: Massage, acupressure, rebozo wrapping, and belly binding for comfort and alignment.
  • Ancestral & Lineage Work: Connecting with maternal lineage, sharing birth stories, and acknowledging intergenerational wisdom.

Personalized Preference Plans & Preparation For Unexpected Changes

A decolonized birth plan shifts the focus from a medical checklist to a holistic approach that centers the birthing person's physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Key Aspects:

  •  Honoring Cultural Practices: Incorporating traditional practices, such as specific birthing positions, singing traditional songs, using traditional medicines like sage, or having culturally specific support people present.
  • Centering Autonomy and Choice:  Ensuring the birthing person has the power to choose their birth setting and care providers, free from coercion. This means providers must offer options and respect the individual's decisions.

Strategies For Preparing For The Unexpected:

  • Shifting Mindset from "Plan" to "Preferences" Frame the plan as a list of "birth preferences" or "birth principles". This acknowledges that while you have wishes, medical necessity may require flexibility.
  •  Prioritizing Values Reflect on what truly matters most (e.g., feeling safe, heard, respected, having continuous support) rather than focusing only on specific outcomes.
  • Education and Knowledge: Understand common scenarios, interventions, and potential complications. This knowledge helps build self-confidence and prepares you to make confident decisions when situations arise.
  • Choosing the Right Support Team: Ensure your care providers (midwives, doctors, nurses) and support people (doula, partner, family) are aware of your preferences, values, and cultural needs, and are committed to supporting shared decision-making.
  • Having a Midwife or Doula with Foundational Medical Necessity Knowledge:  To effectively support clients, explain medical information, facilitate communication with providers, and identify when a situation needs clinical attention, all while staying within their scope of practice. This knowledge builds trust, ensures client safety by recognizing potential risks, and helps clients navigate complex medical decisions, preventing misunderstandings or delays in necessary care.  To act as a bridge, helping clients understand providers and ensuring providers understand the client's preferences, facilitating better decision-making.
